Dr. Cheddi Jagan
1918-1997

Dear Mrs. Janet Jagan, Joey, Nadira, the brothers and sisters of President Jagan, please accept our deepest sympathy on the death of Guyana's greatest son, His Excellency Dr. Cheddi Jagan, father of the Guyanese nation. Like so many other people around the world, we also feel a deep sense of personal loss and tremendous grief. Dr. Jagan, an ordinary man with extraordinary achievements for his people was indeed a charismatic leader, as rear as Mahatma Gandhi, Subas Chandra Bose and Nelson Mandela. He was not afraid to stand up to the might of England's Winston Churchill's and United States John F. Kennedy's imperialism.

As Guyana mourns the passing of this great freedom fighter, let us ensure that the authorities enhsrine his memory in the most idealistic and glorified manner. A permanent memorial symbol must be displayed in an appropriate spot in Guyana as a lasting tribute to the Father of the Guyanese nation. Historians must now document Dr. Jagan's legacy. Dearest Mrs. Jagan, I recall that your beloved late husband was a man of true dignity. A stalwart for what he believed. A great son of the soil has taken his rest, but his works will not. In all my dealings with Dr. Jagan, I found him to be honest and straightforward, and a man of the people. Mr. A. L. Beak once told me that Dr. Jagan is an honest person and he belives that all those around him are honest. Dr. Jagan's honesty has classified him as one who will long be remembered. In this time of grief, I would like, on behalf of myself and family, to convey my sincerest condolences. May God bless you and the Guyanese people.

It's traditional to weep or grieve when our loved ones have passed, For the emptiness they leave behind we know will always last. But in our grief we should reflect, on the life that they have lived The laughter, joy and happiness, and all the love they used to give. For it's not by the length of one's life, but the genuine quality That God selects them to dwell with him throughout eternity. The Cecil Exeter family of Silver Spring, MD

March 7, 1997 Dear Mrs.Jagan, On behalf of my family and myself, I want to express my deepest sympathy to you and your family over the loss of Guyana's most fearless leader and a truly great man, your husband, President Cheddi Jagan. I can still recall those exhilarating days of 1953 when my husband, the late Pandit Sirdhar Misir of Vreed-en-Hoop was elected, along with Dr. Jagan, to Guyana's first democratically elected government.

Those high hopes for Guyana were quickly dashed as foreign interference plunged the country into a long, dark night that only dawned into a beautiful, bright morning with the re-election of Dr.Jagan in 1992. Unfortunately, his days have ended all too soon. As you know, your presence at my late husband's funeral was of great comfort to me and I am most sorry that I will be unable to attend President Jagan's funeral. However, his extraordinary service to Guyana will long be admired and it is with great sorrow to all of us, that he now departs to walk with God. May you and your family be showered with God's choicest blessings and comfort at this time of great need. Sincerely, Mrs. Sirdhar Misir

Dr. Jagan was my hero. There was never a politician so honest, so consistent, so dedicated, and so much concerned about the improvement of people. Dr. Jagan's life and work ranks ranks him with Mahatma Ghandi and Martin Luther King, Jr. His life was well lived in the service of all humanity. As the founding father of our independent nation, we are thankful for his glorious example. Our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Janet Jagan and his family, and to the people of Guyana and to the People's Progressive Party. Long live the ideals of Dr. Jagan! Long live the PPP! Long live the ideals of democracy that Dr. Jagan has chartered!

Dear Janet,Joey,Nadira, and all the rest of the great leader s family.Heartfelt condolences at your sad loss from the entire staff of India Abroad, a newspaper published from New York. I never was fortunate enough to have met President Jagan, but I had the greatest respect and admiration for him and had read so much about him and also his books and writings.I also heard so many stories from my colleague Ela Dutt who visited Guyana in 1992 to cover the elections and interviewed the great leader. She also went back two years later to do an update on President Jagan and Guyana and we had so many special reports on this wonderful human being and the country he loved so much.In fact, my editor and publisher was a good friend of the late President and he always wanted us to cover him extensively.I hope to visit Guyana soon so that I can express my sympathies personally, but once again heartfelt condolences to all of you and also Ambassador Ishamel whom I have met with and find to be a wonderful and warm person whose love for the President knew no bounds.

It is with great sorrow that we mourn the death of a great leader who did everything in his might to restore democracy and freedom in Guyana. For years he fought for the people of Guyana and now it is up to the people of Guyana to fight to maintain and keep the dreams of Dr. Cheddi Jagan alive and well. As a fellow Guyanese, myself and family wishes to offer our heart felt sympathy to Mrs. Jagan and Family, we all share in your grief and sorrow. You have always being strong and today you are showing greater resilience. While for all Guyanese, this moment is an extremely sad one, We should also remind ourselves of the achievements of our Dear President during his political years and it is now time for us all, to consolidate ourselves and continue the legacy and vision Our President had for our Nation, Guyana. Dr. Cheddie B. Jagan will be remembered for a very long time,if not, forever, for he has being not only a Leader, but also the Father of our Nation. To Mrs. Jagan and Family and the people of Guyana, please accept our condolences. May he rest in peace, in God's heaven. (From Vick Singh & Family)

Our hearts go out to you in love. Dr Jagans greatness is achieved by memories held dearly in our lives every day. He showed by example and tutoring what can be achieved through honesty, integrity, dedication, love and comittment. We too have lost a great Father! Dr Jagan will always be held in fond respectful and reverent memories in our family. Long before he died he became a legend. I once explained Dr Jagan to be a man who has captured the imagination of everyone whose path he crossed. That is the beginning of his legendary status. He will continue to inspire. He will never die because he now reside in Guyanese consciousness. Within and without of Guyana. My special message to Mrs Janet Jagan. "You have always been a tower of strength". There is no reason why you should loose this your endearing asset. We all love you! BE STRONG! Yours sincerely, Charles, Anita & Roshenara Khan.

My heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Janet Jagan and the family of Dr. Cheddi Jagan. Dr. Chedy Jagan was one of few men who not only made history but was fully a part of it. As the last Ambassador of Former Yugoslavia to Guyana, I had the privilege to meet Dr Jagan in an official capacity and as a private citizen. If he wanted to speak with someone, he did not care about the title. He was not a man of small talk. Dr. Jagan was a man of strong conviction and a true believer in the righteousness of his work and philosophy of life. He was one of the last of those great men whose life was intertwined with the life of his nation. His only concern was what he could do for his people. Guyana was his greatest concern but he was always interested in the world and the future of socialism. No matter what one thought about his ideology, there is no doubt that he was a man of honesty and good intentions.

On behalf of my prodominantly Guyanese congregations in the USA, I extend sincere condolences to the family and nation of our beloved leader, Dr. Jagan -- a statesman of sterling qualities, a conscientious gentleman, a caring neighbor (from 1975 - 1978 I lived at 65 Bel Air Estate, Dr. Jagan & I were separated by one lot which was occupied by late Boysie Ramkarran). Dr. Jagan was a tower of strength to Guyana. May we too, the remaining sons and daughters of Guyana, grow in strenght and beauty, demonstrating "what Guyana sons and daughters can be."

To The First Family I am deeply grieved to learn of your loss, indeed it is a monumental loss to all Guyanese. It is unfortunate that I have never lived in Guyana, a country that I consider "home," for I grew up mesmerized by the love expoused by my parents and others of their generation for such a "mystical" country. When I was old enough to read about Guyana I learned of a Dr Jagan, a man comparable only to the likes of Mahatma Gandhi, for he decided to fight tyranny and injustice with love and peace. Such a man will be remembered fondly in history and is nothing less than the pinacle in character that one can strive to attain. Such a man makes every one proud to claim Guyana as their home land. His life is an example of character that all should aspire to. Your loss is heart-felt and I wish the best to your family and to our country in the future. Mark Paramlall
