Introduction

Saturday, April 22nd. 2006, most of us awoke to what we expected to be a normal Saturday in our lives. Most of us will begin our day with that cup of tea or coffee, a nice breakfast and then sit down to read the papers or watch some TV.

For me, my Saturday morning always begin the same way, turn on my computer to check my emails and then check the message board here at GNI to see if anything needed my attention, all of this even before my first cup of coffee.

The first thing that catches my eye on the Social Forum that morning, is a topic that reads "tragedy in Guyana" I opened it, posting time was April 22, 2006 04:03 AM by Chameli, a member of the forum.

I scanned the posts and replies and I am startled, 4 replies down it reads "Minister of Agricultue Sat Sawh and his family was executed last nite." posted by Chief another member of the forum. I thought this can't be right, the guys must be pulling a prank, but I started searching desperately through the internet for news. Slowly the news came trickling in, as others posted what they found on the net also.

Needless to say, I lost all desire to have my breakfast, for the next few hours I sat at my computer searching and reading, looking for more and more information.

Others shared their opinions, this was no robbery but the intent to assassinate the minister and his family.

Later, I came up with the idea of a condolence forum,where people can post their messages of condolence.

Below are the messages that I have copied and pasted here to be read.

Some of these messages are very touching - Amral

I have known this family since my childhood days. The children and I grew up together in Mahaicony, and attended the same Secondary School. They were, and still are, one of the simplest and humblest families I have ever known.

It was extremely shocking, and heart wrenching, to hear of the gruesome death of three members of this loving family. Although I am far away from all of them, I wish to let them know that I am there with them in mind and spirit. May god be with them, and guide them thorugh this time of their sadness and grief.

I would also like to extend my sympathy to the family and friends of the security guard that lost his life in this horrible incident.

May all of their souls rest in peace.

Urmilla Singh, Formerly of Mortice, Mahaicony.

On behalf of Foundation Friends of Guyana in The Netherlands, our deepest and heartfeld sympathy to the Sawh Family.Reuben Sukhram

It is very sad to see and read about all the voilence that continues to take place in Guyana. Guyana seens to be a country with a very different political climate(racial)that will never end and I feel as though that will never change for generations to come.Unfortunately no one seems to have the answer to solve this very unique problem that exist in our beloved homeland. My condolences go out to the people of Guyana for all our losses.
Thank You,Dood

Unfortunately, the government of Guyana is incapacitated to apprehend and prevent crime, which is why many more people will become jobs for the criminals. Killing, looting, and robery are all part of Guyana's general landscape today. The people of Guyana need to know that they are living among animals who are willing to prey on them at any time. Take action and stop ignoring how stupid you all are to stand and watch. My deepest sympathy to the family of the minister.
Azaam

MY PEOPLE LET US COME TOGETHER AND LEND OUR COUNTRY A HAND ,THIS IS OUR COUNTRY ,THE PEOPLE THEY KILL ARE OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS LET US SEND EXPERTS IN WHO KNOWS HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THESE THUGS.

Why is the Government so helpless to stop criminals killing our people and destroying our homeland? The GDF and the Police Force need sorting out, the criminals are within. The government should seek international help quick. The Burnham Regime reign with terror for forty years. Rigged election and racial hatred were order of his days. We were the laughing stock of our neighbours and the rest of the world and helpless to do any thing about it. We do not want this again. We need to see ourselves as Guyanese not Indians and Blacks fighting one another. United we stand divided we fall. I would like to visit all my families at home but I am too scared. My deepest sympathy goes to the minister's love ones.

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others,
even to the dull and ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

Our Condolences go out to OP and his family.
May God grant eternal rest to Sat Raj and Julie.
And to OP and the rest of the family may the peace of God be always with you.You will be in our prayers.

Foxy, Richie, Maxi, Ken, Noor Benjie

Good bye my dear friends. God only takes the best. Know these souls will be re-united with their parents and big brother "Hardatt". Our families have know each other since the "black friday" rioting in Guyana,(1962) when we looked out for each other in Kingston, Georgetown. Rest in Peace.

To Sat's wife, Kids, Julie's family and Raj's family, know that God will give you the strength, guidance and wisdom to deal with this tragedy and please, dear friends, 'leave revenge to God', the evil people who did this heneous crime, may or may not come to justice in the life, but rest assure, they will in then next life. They will "burn in hell". God Bless.

sad day for guyana - Jake

My deepest sympathy to the wife, children,relatives and friends of Curtis Robertson.It is with deep regret that someone doing an honest day's work to provide for their family was brutally murderedleaving a great loss and a void that would be difficult to fill. May Jesus grant comfort in this dark hour.

My deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the deceased and all affected by this tragedy. However, I cannot but think that this is probably more than a political message as this would not serve any of the other parties interests. Could someone post where donations to the Robertson family can be sent. Those innocent and sweet looking kids need help.

On behalf of the people of Wakenaam Island (Ontairo Canada)Belle Plaine C.C.& my self i would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the Robertson & Sawh family on the death of their loved ones. I hope the President take note! enough is enough Mr. President! God Bless.

our sympathy to the Sawhs family,relatives and friends for their loss .
On behalf of the Guyanese community living in Waterbury Ct. we extend with regret the loss of all the innocent lives were were taken away by those criminals involved.I do hope they capture all,in this brutal slaying.Severe punishment should be given and then the death penalty as judgement for these criminals . They have no respect for human lives. God made us all to live in this world with peace ,love and harmony.

It is sickening to hear of all these brutal crimes that is happening in Guyana, why ?. Unite and live people , life is beautiful.Put an end to all the hate and anger. United, all of Guyana can stand ! Killing is not the answer to democracy,people.Going forward like this Guyana can never be stable. End racial politics , racial hate and Guyana can be a heaven to live in future. We pray for the lost souls, and may peace be unto them.

My sympathy to the Sawh's family. Its sad and very gruesome and no one should go thru this. I am afraid now to go to Guyana. I hope they family will get the justice they deserve.
Gigi

In coming to know of the tragic death of Minister Sash Sawh and his family, I am deeply saddened at the loss of such a great man and his supportive family members.

Guyana has lost a great son.

The assasination of Guyana's beloved Minsiter of Agriculture was carefully planned and executed. Clearly this is a politically motivated crime which deserves the highest investigative efforts to find and persecute the criminals.

This attack on a democratically elected government is an outrage.

We cannot stand by and let this gruesome massacre to go unsolved.

I truly hope the Canadian Government will make every effort to assist the Guyana Police Force and Government to find these criminals and expose all those behind this.

Enough is enough. Too many people continue to be murdered and yet, these crimes go unsolved.

My warm condolences to the Sawh family. Sash Sawh dedicated his youth and all his life to the restoration of democracy in Guyana. He was a caring man, actively engaging people in his ideals for a better Guyana. He had so much energy; devoted so much time in his active leadership role in the Toronto ACG; always there to talk to people about the homes they have left in Guyana; about the situation in Guyana throughout the 70s and 80s. His family members are always there to support him in his efforts.

How sad to learn of the gruesome crime against him and his family.

It a sad day for all Guyana who has a heart, he was one of the few good minister in government. he will be miss.

Dear Fellow Guyanese I sent my deepest sympathy to the family of Mr Sawh. Although I do not know him my heart goes out to all of you as only those who lost can feel that pain. I hope and pray God give you strenght, health and courage to carry on with life.

God choses the best but it should not be by the hands of murderers. May all those who died in the gruesome murder have a resting place and may God chastise those who commit the murder.
Rabiya of United Kingdom

To both families that have suffered a loss May this be a reminder to all Guyanese that we are one family, we came from the same country, this cycle of violence has to stop. PEACE FOR OUR COUNTRY PEACE FOR IT'S PEOPLE!
JEHAN

We are one nation , one destiny and most of one people.

I am very saddened for BOTH families. These terrorists don't care about Indian or black as you can see, they care about themselves only. The Guyana Govt MUST do as President Bush..take the battle to the terrorists, don't sit and wait and close your eyes and hope it never happens again, or it will again and again and again until they are stopped.
Terrorist fighter

It is sad that even in these sad times people GUYANESE to be precise are still talking about Indian and Black these are sad times and we need to forget colour and ethnicity and proclaim unity .God will certainly bring those responsible to justice quicker than we can expect or comprehend only trust Him. My deepest condolences to the Sawh's family we are all Mahaiconians and we share in your sadness.
fellow guyanese

My family and I are truly saddened and also very angered at the horrific murder of our fellow Guyanese.We would also like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Minister Sawh. This type of tragedy should not go unresolved. I pray that the killers will be detained and made to answer for this terrible crime that they have committed. All my family members from England to the US are praying for our dear Country- Guyana.

We are hopeful that the atrocities that we are now witnessing occurring in our homeland will end and that someday soon we can all live in the harmony that God created us for. May God Bless the Mrs.Sawh and family and give them all strength at this sad time to carry on in faith.

Sad day for Guyana. It's a shame to know that the country has such a small population, and yet the president is unable to provide a safe haven for the indians.
